Ethernet
The Iowa State University data network provides high-speed, reliable connectivity throughout campus. Over 30,000 duplex jacks supporting both Ethernet (data) and voice services are strategically located in every campus classroom, office, laboratory, and student room. Iowa State also has an extensive wireless network with public access points at many locations throughout campus.
The Residence Halls at Iowa State University are wired with at least one duplex voice/data jack in each room. The data side of the jack is used to provide Ethernet service, giving you access to the campus network and the Internet.
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service is available in Schilletter and University Village apartments.
The Student Network Access Program (SNAP) is available to help you connect your personal computer to the campus network. An assistant can install an Ethernet card in your computer, configure the card for an on-campus Ethernet or DSL connection, and help load networking software. Students can bring their computers to the Solution Center, 195 Durham Center, and have the setup done there. (Also, residence hall visits can be scheduled during move-in week of fall semester.) SNAP is funded by student computer fees, so there is no charge for most standard services. You can contact the SNAP team though the Solution Center, 515-294-4000.
You can configure your computer to access the university's network by following these instructions:
If you live off-campus, you have several remote access options available to enable access to the campus network and the Internet including the university's PPP service and third party internet service providers (ISPs).
If you are faculty or staff and need to set up Ethernet service on campus contact your unit's Voice/Data Coordinator.
