FAQ: Is X-Win32 available to the campus community?

Yes, Iowa State has an educational, unlimited site license for X-Win32 by StarNet Communications that is effective until July 1, 2010.

Several departments have covered a portion of the site-license costs. Each department has agreed to permit installation of the software on any computer on campus owned by the university. However, if you intend to install more than five copies of the product in your department or college (e.g., in a lab), please consider contributing towards the cost of the license agreement.

REACTIVATING EXISTING INSTALLATIONS

X-Win32 Versions 8.1 and higher:

1. Start the X-Win32 server by clicking Start -> All Programs -> X-Win32 n.n -> X-Win32.

2. Right-click on the X-Win32 icon in the System Tray and choose Support -> Licenses.

3. Highlight "My Licenses" and click Add.

4. Choose "Network (Floating)" and click OK.

5. Copy and paste the license key below (all sixteen lines) into the text box:

X-Win32 Version 7.1:

Existing installations of X-Win32 7.1 revert to a "demo" mode once the license key expires. To reactivate the software:

1. Run the X-Config applet under Start/Programs/X-Win32/X-Config or right-click on the "X" System Tray icon and choose X-Config.

2. Click on the License tab.

3. Type in one of the following license keys, depending on your machine's IP number:

INSTALLING THE NEWEST VERSION OF X-WIN 32 (VERSION 9.4)

1. The latest X-Win32 software (version 9.4) includes a built-in SSH client that provides secure X connections. Because this component includes encryption software, it is subject to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations. To download X-Win32 visit this link:

3. Click "Submit".

4. Select the version of X-Win32 you wish to download (backleveled versions and versions without the SSH client and encryption software can be downloaded) and click "Download".

5. If you are downloading the full package including SSH and encryption software, you must read the agreement, enter "Yes" in the box, and click "Download" again.

6. Run the downloaded installer to install X-Win32. You'll be asked to enter the license key again during the installation.

After installing X-Win32, you will want to secure it by only allowing incoming connections from the localhost. For X-Win32 9.4 this is the default. In X-Win32 7.1 you can change this setting by:

1. Running the installed XConfig program.
2. On the security tab, click "Add".
3. In the Add XHost box type 127.0.0.1 and click "OK".
4. Check the Access Control box.
5. Click "OK".

XWin32 should now be configured to only accept incoming connections from the local computer, which will only allow connections via SSH.
