FAQ: How do I remove spyware from my Windows computer?

Keywords: spyware | remove | popup | mcafee | adaware | spybot | search and destroy

Spyware can cause frequent popups, annoying toolbars, unusually decreased computer performance, or redirection by the browser to advertising websites.

To avoid these problems, we recommend using the McAfee AntiSpyware software that is site-licensed by Iowa State. It is available to faculty, staff, departments, and students at no charge.

While AntiSpyware Enterprise can be used as a standalone package, it works best as an add-in module for VirusScan Enterprise. Both packages are available via Scout; go to the Downloads page at http://www.it.iastate.edu/downloads/.

(Note: For 64-bit version of the anti-spyware, download the installer at https://www.sitelicensed.iastate.edu/sof...TISPYWARE/ instead.)

Another solution would be to use both Ad-Aware by Lavasoft and Spybot Search and Destroy. These two programs, used together, will help with most spyware and adware problems.
