These instructions are for accessing the POP mail service also known as WebMail. For CyMail use Google's instructions under Settings, Forwarding.
-----------------------------------

With the release of Thunderbird 1.5, it is now possible to check your Iowa State email using Network Identity Manager. This has resolved some past issues with checking email from off-campus locations.

You can download Thunderbird 1.5 from Mozilla's website at http://www.mozilla.org/. From there you can run the installer to install Thunderbird on your system. If you have another program on your computer (such as Eudora or Outlook), the first time you run Thunderbird the import wizard will start up.

If your other mail client is already set up to check your Iowa State email, you can select the mail client in the list and import the settings. If you do this, the majority of the settings will be imported and you can skip to step 9.

If you do not have another email client already set up to check your Iowa State email, you can set it up manually by selecting the "Don't Import Anything" option. After clicking on the "Import Wizard", Thunderbird will open the "Account Wizard". The account wizard can also be started by going to the Tools Menu and selecting Account Settings, and then clicking the "Add" button.

In the Account Wizard:

1. Select Email Account, then click Next.

2. Enter your name in the "Your Name" field and enter "" (using your Net-ID) in the "Email Address" field; then click Next.

3. Select POP for the type of incoming server and "netid.mail.iastate.edu" (again, using your Net-ID) for the Incoming Server.

4. Enter "mailhub.iastate.edu"' for the Outgoing Server and click Next.

5. If you wish your Incoming or Outgoing Username to be different you can change it; otherwise click Next.

6. If you wish your Account Name to be different you can change it; otherwise click Next.

7. Thunderbird will show you the settings that you just entered; verify that they are correct.

8. Uncheck the box "Download messages now" and click Finish.

9. Go to Tools, then Account Settings. Click on Server Settings for the account you just created and check "Use Secure Authentication"; click OK.

10. Go to Tools, then Options, and click the Advanced Tab.

11. Click the Config Editor button.

12. Type "network.auth" in the filter box and set the value of "network.auth.use-sspi" to false (double-clicking will toggle the value).

13. Obtain Kerberos tickets with Network Identity Manager.

14. Click the Check Mail button.
