FAQ: How do I configure Mozilla Thunderbird to check my Iowa State email on a Macintosh

Keywords: mozilla | thunderbird | email | macintosh

These instructions are for accessing the POP mail service also known as WebMail. For CyMail use Google's instructions under Settings, Forwarding.
-----------------------------------------------
Before beginning the Thunderbird installation, you are required to have and configure the latest Kerberos updates to enable you to check your Iowa State email.

1. Follow the instructions on the following page under "Kerberos for Mac OS X":

http://www.it.iastate.edu/news/showitem.php?id=276

2. Once you have installed Kerberos Extras, Kerberos Config 5, and restarted your computer, download Thunderbird 2.0 from Mozilla's website at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/.

3. From there you can save the installer (the .dmg file) to your desktop or a preferred folder.

4. Open the Thunderbird .dmg file saved on your computer.

5. Accept the license agreement.

6. Drag the Thunderbird icon to the Applications folder to install the program when prompted.

7. Open the Thunderbird program in the Applications folder.

If another mail client is already set up to check your Iowa State email, you can select the mail client in the list and import the settings. If you do this, the majority of the settings will be imported and you can skip to step 9 below.

If you do not have another email client already set up to check your Iowa State email, you can set it up manually by selecting the "Don't Import Anything" option. After clicking Continue on the "Import Wizard", Thunderbird will open the "Account Wizard". The account wizard can also be started by going to the Tools Menu and selecting Account Settings, and then clicking the "Add" button.

In the Account Wizard:

1. Select Email Account, then click Next.

2. Enter your name in the "Your Name" field and enter "" (using your Net-ID) in the "Email Address" field; then click Next.

3. Select POP for the type of incoming server and "netid.mail.iastate.edu" (again, using your Net-ID) for the Incoming Server.

4. Enter "mailhub.iastate.edu"' for the Outgoing Server and click Next.

5. If you wish your Incoming or Outgoing Username to be different you can change it; otherwise click Next.

6. If you wish your Account Name to be different you can change it; otherwise click Next.

7. Thunderbird will show you the settings that you just entered; verify that they are correct.

8. Uncheck the box "Download messages now" and click Finish.

9. Go to Tools, then Account Settings. Click on Server Settings for the account you just created and check "Use Secure Authentication"; click OK.

10. Obtain Kerberos tickets by either logging in with the Kerberos application in /Applications/Utilities or by entering:

kinit -l [NetID]@IASTATE.EDU

in the Terminal application (where [NetID] is your Iowa State Net-ID). If your OS X username matches your NetID, you can enter "kinit".

11. Check your email by clicking on the Check Mail button.

12. If asked for a password, put in "isu" (without quotes) as the password.
