Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop service allows a user to view and/or control the screen of a remote computer over the network using the keyboard, mouse, and monitor of the local computer. In essence, the service allows a user to work on a remote computer as if they were sitting in front of it.

Remote Desktop may be used by a university employee to remotely access an office computer, for example, from a laptop computer while on a business trip, or by a student to remotely access a home computer from a laptop while on campus. Use of the Iowa State University virtual private network (VPN) is not required when using Remote Desktop, but it is strongly suggested, particularly for ISU employees who work with sensitive data.

IT Services uses Remote Desktop software on workstations covered under Comprehensive Support to provide immediate help to remote users, saving time and support costs and enhancing service quality.

With Basic Support, Solution Center staff will explain at no charge to students, faculty, and staff how Remote Desktop works and how it may be set up and used. As part of Custom Support, IT Services staff will set up and enable Remote Desktop functionality for users on requested systems for a fee. The Comprehensive Support level includes setup and support for the Remote Desktop service. All requests for Remote Desktop support may be made through the Solution Center.

On a Windows system, Remote Desktop software is called Remote Desktop Connection, and is included as part of most Windows operating systems, or it may be downloaded at no charge from the Microsoft website for supported Windows operating systems.

On a Macintosh system, Remote Desktop software is called Apple Remote Desktop, and it must be purchased as an add-on to Mac OS X. A Remote Desktop connection client is available at no charge from Microsoft that allows Macintosh clients to remotely view and control the desktop on Windows computers. Apple Remote Desktop may be purchased at a standard education discount by university departments or by individuals displaying a valid ISUCard at Tech CYte.
