Manage Spam (Exchange)

Iowa State's spam email tagging system examines all messages coming to campus and calculates the probability that a message is spam. For Exchange users there is a default "ISU Spam Rule", where any message with a 60% or greater probability of being spam will, by default, be sent to your Junk folder.

If you don't want the ISU Spam Rule applied to your incoming email, you can disable the rule.

Outlook Web Access (OWA)

  1. Log in to Outlook Web Access using your Iowa State Net-ID and password.
  2. Click "Options" on the top right side of the page.
  3. Click "Create an Inbox Rule".
  4. Click the box next to "ISU SPAM Rule" to disable the rule.

Outlook 2010/2011 Mac/2013

  1. Click the "File" tab on the browser (2010/2013), or the "Home" tab (2011 Mac).
  2. Scroll to "Manage Rules and Alerts" (2010/2013), or "Rules and Edit Rules" (2011 Mac).
  3. Click "New Rule".
  4. Uncheck the box next to "ISU SPAM Rule" to disable the rule.

Outlook 2007

  1. Click the "Tools" tab on the browser.
  2. Scroll to "Rules and Alerts".
  3. Click "New Rule".
  4. Uncheck the box next to "ISU SPAM Rule" to disable the rule.

You may receive a warning that modifying your rules will delete any rules that were previously turned off using Outlook. Since these rules are disabled, you are not currently using them and it is likely safe to continue. If you do not want to have your Outlook rule(s) deleted you can disable the "ISU Spam Rule" through Outlook instead of Outlook Web Access.

If you are finding that too many, or too few, outside emails are being sent to the Junk folder, you may want to change the percentage of probability on your incoming mail. (Currently any message with a 60% or greater probability of being spam will, by default, be sent to your Junk folder.)
