Static IP Address Setup for Windows 2000/XP
Handout KNG 278 -- June 2006
Overview
Information Technology Services provides Ethernet service to Iowa State University. Ethernet service provides access to the Internet, email, and other campus network services. To use Ethernet service, you need:
- An Ethernet connection. If you are in an office, you can arrange for this connection with the Solution Center, 195 Durham Center (solution@iastate.edu). If you are in a residence hall room, there should be an active Ethernet connection.
- An Ethernet card installed in your computer and an Ethernet cable. You can purchase an Ethernet card and cable from Tech CYte, University Bookstore, Memorial Union. Ethernet cards and cables can be purchased from other suppliers as well.
- An Internet Protocol address (IP address). (For instructions on requesting, see section 1.)
- Your computer configured to use TCP/IP, the Internet Protocol (for instructions, see section 2).
- Internet applications such as Netscape, Eudora, Telnet, or FTP installed on the system (see handout WNG 231, "Scout: Getting Network Software for Computers Running Windows").
For this configuration procedure, you need the original installation files for the Windows 2000 system on your machine. For most systems, this will be the original Windows 2000 CD. If the system came with the operating system pre-installed, check the hard drive for the existence of a directory (folder) called c:i386 or c:winnti386. If this directory exists, it should contain a copy of the original installation files and may be referred to instead of the Windows 2000 CD.
