Assumptions
- You already have an Ethernet adapter or wireless card installed in your computer. If you need an Ethernet adapter or wireless networking card, you can purchase one at TechCYte in the University Book Store, Memorial Union.
- You are attempting to make a connection via Ethernet or wireless connection.
- You already have an Iowa State Net-ID.
- You are in a building that supports Iowa State's NetReg (all residence halls, Schilletter/University Village, Frederiksen Court, many on-campus buildings).
- [Wireless only] You are in a wireless zone for the wireless network. Depending on how the building is constructed and where the access point is located, you may need to be in or very near the room that has wireless access; see existing access areas online at http://www.it.iastate.edu/wireless/.
- [Wireless only] Your wireless card software is configured to use a public (non-encrypted) network.
If you need help installing your Ethernet adapter, the Student Network Access Program (SNAP) team can help at no charge for students. Contact them in 195 Durham Center or at 515-294-4000.
A few settings need to be made on your computer before it can be used on the campus network. You will not need to know your IP settings because they will be assigned to your computer using a technology called DHCP.
Setting Up Your Mac OS X Computer
- Under the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
- Click the Network icon and set Show (or Configure) to Ethernet [Airport, if wireless].
- [Wireless only] Click the AirPort tab, and set your Preferred Network to IASTATE.
- Click the TCP/IP tab, and set Configure to Using DHCP.
- In the Search Domains, enter: iastate.edu
- Quit System Preferences. Save the changes when prompted to do so.
To register your connection, open a web browser, go to this link and follow the instructions:
http://netreg.iastate.edu/
At this point, you should be connected. For more technical assistance, contact the Solution Center in 195 Durham Center or at 515-294-4000.
