1 Register for PPP

On a machine already connected to the Internet, start up a web browser and go to AccessPlus at
http://accessplus.iastate.edu. - Enter the middle nine digits of the number on your red ISUCard and password and click
Login. - Click
on either the "Student" of the "Employee" tab. - Click on "Telephone Services."
- Click on "PPP Activation."
- Select Date for the start of PPP service, then click "Request Activation."
- Click
Logout. - Close the window.
2 OS X Setup for PPP
2.1 Set Up Your Macintosh
- Under the Apple menu, select System Preferences, then click the Network icon.
- Under Show (or Configure), select Internal Modem.
- Click the TCP/IP tab, and set Configure to Using PPP.
- Enter iastate.edu under search domains.
- Click the PPP tab.
- Under Service Provider enter ISU PPP.
- Enter one of the following numbers:
Ames local dialing area: 268-4565
Long distance to Ames: 1-515-268-4565
Traveler number: 1-866-251-5488
- Note: A charge of 12 cents per minute will be added to traveler number calls and will be billed to the PPP username account; the charge is included when calculating the $7 minimum monthly use fee, and is in addition to the usual per-hour PPP charge. As a security measure, users will be notified via email of the date, time, and length of each such login.
- Under
Account Nameenter your Net-ID. - Click the Modem tab.
- If your Mac has an internal modem, under Modem select
Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90). If you have an iMac, this instead may sayiMac Internal 56K Modem. If you have an external modem, consult the documentation that came with the modem for the correct selection. - Click
Apply Now(orSave) and quit System Preferences.
2.2 Make a PPP Connection
- Open your hard drive, and double-click
Applications. - Double-click
Internet Connect. - Under Configuration, select
Internal Modem.
- Under Password, enter your Iowa State Net-ID password.
- Click
Connect. - The Status line will change as your machine is connecting to the network. When you have established a connection, information will appear in the bottom of the window showing how long you have been connected.
2.3 Close the PPP Connection
Internet Connection does not automatically close the PPP connection when you quit your Internet applications. This
allows you to use other applications, but it also means that if you do not close the connection, you'll
continue accumulating PPP charges. To disconnect
- Quit any Internet applications.
- Open the Internet Connection application.
- Click
Disconnect. - When you have been disconnected, the Status line will change to
Idle.
2.4 Deactivating PPP
- Connect to the Internet, start a web browser and go to AccessPlus at http://accesspluf.iastate.edu.
- Enter the middle nine digits of the number on your red ISUCard and password and click "login."
- Click on either the "Student" of the "Employee" tab.
- Click on "Telephone Services."
- Click on "PPP Deactivation."
- Select Date for the end of PPP service, then click "Request Deactivation".
- Click "Logout."
- Close Window.
