Email Client Setup for Macintosh OS X (MNG 333)
Overview
This document will guide you through configuring Eudora and OS X Mail for use with Iowa State's email service. You must complete the section called "Kerberos Setup" before moving to the general directions.
1 Kerberos Setup
You will need to configure Kerberos on your OS X machine before using any of the mail clients in this document. There are two steps: installing the Kerberos Extras for OS X, and configuring Kerberos to use Iowa State's servers. Before continuing, you should quit all other applications running on your machine.
1.1 Installing Kerberos Extras for OS X
- Kerberos Extras for Mac OS X is supplied by MIT. Open a web browser and download: http://web.mit.edu/macdev/Download/Mac_OS_X_Kerberos_Extras.dmg
- Find the "Mac_OS_X_Kerberos_Extras.dmg" file and double-click on it. This will mount the disk image "Mac OS X Kerberos Extras". Open the image.
- In the window that opens, double-click on the "Mac OS X Kerberos Extras" installer. It will ask you for the Name and Password of an Administrator on your machine. Enter the information and click on "OK".
- Click on "Continue". Read the license and click on "Accept" and then click on "Continue".
- In the window that pops up, select the name of your system hard drive under the section called "Install Location" and click on "Install".
- When the installation is complete, click on "Quit".
1.2 Configuring Kerberos for Use With Iowa State's Servers
-
Download the Kerberos configuration file from http://tech.ait.iastate.edu/macosx/downloads.shtml.
- Find the "KerberosConfig.dmg" file and double-click on it. This will make a file called "KerberosConfig.dmg". Click on the file. This will mount the disk image called "Kerberos Config". Open the image, and double-click on "KerberosConfig.pkg".
- The Kerberos Config installer will ask for an Administrator Name and Password. Enter the information and click on "OK".
- Click on "Continue". The installer will ask you to pick a destination disk. Select the same disk on which you installed the Kerberos Extras for Mac OS X and click on "Continue" and then "Install".
- The installer will tell you that you must restart your machine after installing this software. Click on "Continue Installation".
- When the installation is complete, click on "Restart".
2 Eudora
ITS has a site-license for the Eudora email program, which includes an OS X version of the program. For information on downloading the installer, see "Downloading Site-Licensed Software for Macintosh (MNG 332)" at http://www.it.iastate.edu/pub/mng332/. These instructions assume you have downloaded the installer already. You will want to download the version of Eudora listed under the "Current" section. You must have completed Section 1 "Kerberos Setup" for this to work.
2.1 Installing Eudora
- Find the Eudora .dmg file (its name will be something like Eudora-nnnn.dmg, where "nnnn" is a version number, e.g., 0611) and double-click on it. This will mount a Eudora disk image. Open that disk image and double-click on the Installer program.
- After reading the pages, click "Continue" and then "Continue". Read the License and click on "Agree".
- Highlight "Install Eudora for the first time" and click on "Install".
- The installer will ask you where to install the Eudora application. Any location will work, but the standard location is in the Applications folder of your hard drive. Choose your location and click on "Choose".
- When finished, the installer will respond that is it was successful. Click on "OK".
2.2 Configuring Eudora
- Find the Eudora application (it will be a file called Eudora in a folder called "Eudora Application Folder" in the location where you had the installer put Eudora) and doubleclick it.
- Eudora may ask if you want to use the System Keychain. Click on "No".
- Eudora will ask if you want to import settings and mail from another email application. Click on "No".
- The Eudora Settings window will open up. Under "Getting started", enter the following information
(NetID is your Iowa State Network-ID): Username: NetID
Mail Server: NetID.mail.iastate.edu
Real Name: Your Name
SMTP Server: mailhub.iastate.edu

Enter the number of days you would like Eudora to leave your mail on the server, or leave it blank to have Eudora leave mail on the server indefinitely. (Note: Mail on the mail servers that is over 6 months old will eventually be deleted automatically.)
If you leave mail on the server but would like Eudora to remove a message from the server when you empty it from your Eudora trash, click on "Delete from server when emptied from trash". - Under Kerberos (you will have to scroll down to the bottom of the list on the left side of the configuration
window), enter the following information:
Kerberos POP3: 110
Realm: IASTATE.EDU

Service Format: ^0/^0@^2
Make sure "Use Kerberos" and "Use Kerberos V/GSSAPI for POP3" are checked. - Click on "OK".
-
