There are two options recommended when using a credit card in dial-up networking:
-
Enter the entire dialing sequence including credit card
number in the "Phone number" section as shown. In this
case, the hotel dialing instructions to get to AT&T
would be first, then the number you are calling, then
7-8 commas, and finally the credit card number. The
commas are to make the modem pause for a period of
time, usually 2 seconds per comma. This causes the
modem to wait for the tone signaling you to enter your
credit card number. The timing is critical using this
method and sometimes you have to adjust the number of
commas.

-
Use manual dial. In this case, you actually
dial the number on the phone set in the room,
listen for the correct tones, enter your credit
card number, then allow the computer to connect.
This is a more reliable option in most cases.
However, it requires that your modem allow a phone
set to be connected to it. (The modem must have two
ports.) These are the steps.
- Set up your dial-up networking icon to use manual dial -
- Right click on the icon. Choose "Properties".
|
|
| |
- Click on the "Configure…" button.
|
|
| |
- Choose the "Options" tab. Click on "Operator assisted or manual dial".
- Save options by clicking on "OK", then "OK" again.
- Connect the line from the wall to your modem, then
a line out from your modem to the phone in the
room.
- Double click on the ISU PPP icon, then click on the
first "Connect" button. This is the next screen that
you will see.

- There is a trick at this point in getting the systems to connect.
- Manually dial the numbers the hotel gives to get to AT&T.
- Dial the end user number.
- Wait for the calling card tone. Enter the calling card number except the last digit.
- Click the "Connect" box on your computer.
- Dial the last digit and hang up the phone.
