Desktop Videoconferencing Hardware and System Components
The minimum requirements for each site involved in a desktop video conference include a computer (either laptop or desktop), a high-speed internet connection, a webcam, a microphone, and a speaker.
Computer
Both Macs and PCs may be used for videoconferencing. A newer, more powerful computer is recommended and should meet all the requirements of the chosen software package. More powerful computers with the latest operating systems also allow for more options, such as higher resolution video and may be required to do multi-site conferencing, screen and file sharing, and other additional features.
Internet Connection
A strong, wired internet connection is recommended for desktop videoconferencing. Most software packages will automatically adjust the quality of your video based on your connection speed. Adding more remote sites to a conference will increase the bandwidth requirement. It is possible to videoconference wirelessly, but results may vary, particularly for multi-site conferencing.
Webcam
Nearly any webcam is capable of being used for desktop videoconferencing. A system with a minimum resolution of 640 x 480 and minimum frame rate of 30 fps is best. Most desktop videoconferencing software does not support anything higher than this. In fact, most packages are limited to a resolution of 320 x 240; but, the additional cost for a higher quality system is minimal and allows for future quality upgrades without the need for new hardware.
Sound System
Many webcams have a built-in microphone and most computers have some type of speaker system, so additional hardware may not be required. However, when speakers are used there is always the danger of feedback. If only one person is at a site, it is common for the microphone and speaker system to be incorporated into a headset. This generally eliminates feedback problems and makes it easier for the participants to hear.
