LinkedIn Learning to Replace as Online Learning Platform

At the end of July, Iowa State University will migrate its existing online learning resources from to LinkedIn Learning, as part of a necessary transition due to the discontinuation of the former tool.

LinkedIn acquired, an open online course website, in 2015, and will shut it down at the end of 2019. In preparation for the shutdown, LinkedIn is requiring all subscribers, including Iowa State, to move to the website’s replacement and LinkedIn subsidiary, LinkedIn Learning, this summer. has been in use on campus for more than six years, and its services will officially migrate to LinkedIn Learning on July 29.

“The biggest change users will see as part of this transition is the appearance of the website itself,” said Information Technology Services (ITS) Director of Enterprise Services and Customer Success Mike Lohrbach. “Although it will look different, the available content will be the same, and LinkedIn Learning will function essentially the same as, but with additional features.”

LinkedIn Learning will offer more than 9,000 digital courses focusing on skills, subjects, and software, taught by industry experts and available in English, Spanish, German, and French. Iowa State students and employees will be able to use the service on both desktop and mobile devices, earn certificates of completion, and receive course suggestions based on learning history.

After July 29, university account holders that had added the tile to their Okta dashboard will see it replaced with a tile for LinkedIn Learning. Following the change, Iowa State users with an existing LinkedIn profile will be asked if they would like to connect their university LinkedIn Learning profile to it, allowing individuals to build skills based on courses taken through LinkedIn Learning.

"One of the best parts of this change is that LinkedIn Learning has a wide array of content available for us to learn at our own pace," said Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) Program Coordinator Laura Bestler. “We can curate customized LinkedIn Learning content to easily share with students and colleagues."

After the transition, existing links to in training, classroom, or other materials may need to be checked and manually changed to their new LinkedIn Learning URL. In preparation for the transition, faculty using in coursework are encouraged to contact the IT Solution Center at 515-294-4000 or
