Network load management upgrade

This news item expired December 8, 2004. It may contain out-of-date information.
Recently, students living in the residence halls have reported problems with network availability. Good news . . . help is on the way.

An efficient network requires a combination of adequate bandwidth and management of the traffic. Increased bandwidth this fall alleviated some woes but brought new challenges in managing the increased network traffic, more of which is taking multiple paths to campus.

The installation of upgrades to existing network management components has been expedited and the work is expected to be completed by the end of November. An interruption in service during the upgrade is not anticipated. The equipment improvements will allow Iowa State to manage network traffic more effectively in the residence halls and position our campus networks to better handle future increases in Internet bandwidth.
