Windows Lockout Policy Effective October 3

This news item expired October 13, 2006. It may contain out-of-date information.
Effective Tuesday, October 3, five failed login attempts from a computer will temporarily prevent logging in to the Windows Enterprise Domain.

The series of failed attempts will result in a pause (approximately 30 seconds) followed by the message "Unable to log you on because your account has been locked out, please contact your administrator." A wait of one minute will allow login with a correct password.

This account lockout process is designed to slow down automated hacking attempts as another step toward increasing the security of IT at Iowa State. The policy is similar to that applied last July to Net-ID logins. Users who know and correctly type their passwords see little effect from these policies.
