IT Services Blocking Outbound Spam

This news item expired March 31, 2008. It may contain out-of-date information.
IT Services has been working systematically to suppress inbound spam for many years. However, recently there has been an excessive amount of outbound spam flowing through Iowa State mailhub servers, due in part to compromised servers or individual workstations. This excessive outbound spam has caused some email from ISU to be blacklisted temporarily, meaning the email is prevented from reaching its intended destination. In an effort to prevent this blacklisting, IT Services has worked with college IT staff to devise a method for blocking outbound spam that should be transparent to users. If your outbound email was blocked due to a high spam probability, you will receive a bounced email with an error message similar to the following: ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- (reason: 550 5.0.0 Email rejected because spam probability too high. Please see: ) More information about outbound spam blocking: http://www.it.iastate.edu/faq/view.php?id=777 For more information about spam, including how to limit it on your computer: http://www.it.iastate.edu/spam/ If you have further questions, contact your local IT support person or the IT Services Solution Center at 515-294-4000.
