VPN Service: Out with the Old, In with the New

This news item expired May 29, 2009. It may contain out-of-date information.
Virtual private networking (VPN) enables you to log into the Iowa State network securely using encryption. Using the Iowa State VPN, your computer becomes a "virtual" campus computer with secure access to campus network services.

IT Services has put into production a new VPN AnyConnect Client, a VPN service based on SSL, with clients available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The older, certificate-based VPN is scheduled to be taken out of operation on May 27, 2009.

To use, connect your favorite browser to http://vpn.iastate.edu/ and follow the instructions. A thin client gets installed through your browser. When you connect, your machine will be issued an IP number unique to your Net-ID. Note that you will need administrative rights on your computer so that the client can be installed. Authentication is done from the client, and every time you connect you have to enter your Net-ID and password.
