June 19 Seminar: Facebook and Friends

This news item expired June 19, 2009. It may contain out-of-date information.
A panel presentation and discussion regarding various aspects of online social networking is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at 2:00 p.m. in 206 Durham Center.

Although other social networks preceded Facebook (e.g., Friendster, MySpace), Facebook is now considered to be the largest social networking site. Also growing in popularity is Twitter, an online application that can function as a blog, a social network, or an instant messaging tool.

The panel presentation and discussion at this seminar will present an overview of social networking and related applications--how they work, who's using them, why it matters (or does it?), and the benefits and downsides as well as accounts of personal experiences.

Panelists and Topics:
-- Jim Twetten, IT Services; Overview of Social Networking
-- Gerry McKiernan, ISU Library; Niche Social Network Sites
-- Sarah Passonneau, ISU Library; Protecting Yourself on Social Networks
-- Alex Kharbush, ISU Student; How One Student Stays Connected

Bring yourself and your questions, and prepare for a lively discussion. No pre-registration is necessary.
