New Telephone System: Installation Underway

Installation of telephones for a new cloud-based telephone system began this week, running a bit ahead of schedule so far. ITS has been fielding numerous questions about the new system, especially regarding Lync systems and headsets.


In addition to the current Avaya phone system, which is being converted to Aastra, Iowa State offers telephone services through Microsoft Lync. Most Lync customers will not receive new telephones or be converted to the new service with Aastra. If you are a Lync user, and you have not been notified by your voice/data coordinator that you will be converting to Aastra, you can assume that you will remain with Lync, and you will not receive a new telephone.

Once the initial conversion to the Aastra telephone system is complete, on July 1, Lync users will have the opportunity to convert completely to Aastra, or to use Aastra for some services while continuing to use Lync for other services such as instant messaging, presence, and Lync meetings. If you are interested in exploring this option, or if you are interested in converting from Avaya (or Aastra) to a Lync system, please work with your department coordinator.


Many Iowa State telephone customers use headsets. Some are wireless and others are corded. All current headset users on an Avaya system will receive a headset with the new system. ITS and the voice/data coordinators are aware of all wireless headset users because those devices are in the database. There are some corded headsets, that were purchased individually, that may not be in the records of ITS or the voice/data coordinators. In that case, the voice/data coordinators need to be notified that you are a headset user and would like to continue to use a headset.
