Ten Steps to get you started with IT at Iowa State.

1. Know Your Net-ID Password and Keep It Safe

Your Net-ID allows you to log into computers on campus and access other personal information so never share it.

2. Connect to Campus Internet

Wireless internet is available all over campus. Learn how to connect wirelessly through eduroam and register your devices.

Wired internet may be available to you through your department. Contact Your Solution Center for availability.

Safe, secure remote/off campus access to campus network services is available through Iowa State's virtual private network (VPN). Visit the VPN page for more information.

3. Access Your E-mail Account (Exchange)

Exchange provides e-mail and calendaring in an integrated environment.

4. Install Free or Discounted Software

Iowa State has a large volume of software available to you at no charge. Browse and download software for faculty and staff.

5. Get Communicating

Telephone service is provided to faculty and staff to suit their telecommunication needs on campus. Visit the Telephone Services page to learn more.

Video and web conferencing allows for meetings between individuals and small groups in remote locations while reducing travel time and costs. Visit the Web Conferencing page for more information.

6. Stay Cyber Secure

Visit the IT Security website for tips on how to keep your computer secure and the latest security alerts.

7. Store Your Files

CyBox is an ideal solution for storage of your day-to-day documents as well as collaborative tools for sharing files on and off campus. Visit the CyBox page for more information

8. Harness Classroom Technology

Online Classroom environment is available through Canvas. Canvas is Iowa State's secure environment for online teaching, learning, and classroom management. Get started with MyCanvas Teacher.

Record Content with Iowa State's video capture software, Panopto. Panopto enables instructors to record videos of lectures, presentations, and supplementary material.

Interactive Classroom is enabled through Iowa State's audience engagement tool, Top Hat. Top Hat offers a comprehensive way for tracking student engagement and participation and other opportunities to enrich classroom learning. Visit the Audience Engagement for Faculty page for more information.

9. Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3

Bubble sheet tests and scoring services are available for exams, surveys, and teacher evaluations. Visit the Test & Evaluation Services page for more information about administering and scoring exams using bubble sheets.

10. Boost Your Skills With

You have unlimited, free access to, an online training library with thousands of video tutorials on topics like Adobe Creative Suite. Log into using your Net-ID and password.
