Replacing Webex LTI in Canvas

Project Overview

As part of the transition to Microsoft Teams for communication and collaboration needs on campus, Webex for calling and videoconferencing will be retired in summer 2026. The Webex connector in Canvas, also referred to as the Webex LTI, will be retired and replaced with a Microsoft Teams connector, also called the Microsoft Education LTI with Teams and Meetings.

Current status: The initiative to retire the Webex LTI in Canvas has been announced. 

Project Details

The Webex connector in Canvas can continue to be used throughout the spring 2026 semester. After the semester concludes, it will be retired and replaced with the Microsoft Teams connector (called the Microsoft Education LTI with Teams and Meetings). Information Technology Services in collaboration with the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching are working together to ensure a smooth transition to the new LTI in Canvas. Communication with instructors will be ongoing to share updates, resources and training. 

Schedule & Timeline

  • December 2025
    • The transition away from the Webex LTI is announced. Webex in Canvas can continue to be used throughout the spring 2026 semester.
    • As a first step in transitioning to the Microsoft Education LTI with Teams and Meetings in Canvas, the required security review of the tool is initiated.
  • January 2026:
    • Pilot is launched for early adoption of Microsoft Education LTI with Teams and Meetings. Pilot participants receive access to the LTI.
    • Training and start-of-semester resources provided by ITS and CELT.
  • February 2026:
    • Preliminary feedback collected via survey of pilot participants.
  • March/April 2026:
    • Final feedback collected via survey of pilot participants.
    • Recommendation and planning for campus-wide implementation of Microsoft Education LTI.
    • Campus-wide communications and training
  • May 2026
    • Sunset Webex LTI and begin transition to Microsoft Education LTI as the primary Canvas integration.
    • Campus-wide communications and training.

Frequently Asked Questions

You may continue to use the Webex integration for the Spring 2026 semester or voluntarily participate in the Microsoft Education LTI Pilot. If you choose to participate in the Microsoft Education LTI pilot, you will have the option to enable Microsoft Education in your Canvas course(s) during the Spring 2026 semester. This integration allows you to use Microsoft Meetings and Teams directly within Canvas, providing new ways to collaborate and communicate with students while keeping all course activity in one centralized location.

 

The Microsoft Education LTI for Teams and Meetings supports:

  • Scheduling and joining Teams Meetings directly from Canvas.
  • Streamlined access to meeting recordings and shared course materials.
  • Collaboration tools such as chat, file sharing, and group spaces within Teams.

If you are interested in participating in the Microsoft Learning LTI for Teams and Meetings pilot in spring 2026, please complete the Microsoft Education LTI Pilot Interest Form. You will be added to the pilot group and will receive additional information and resources in early January. 

  • Enabling the Microsoft Education LTI in your Canvas course.
  • Using Teams and/or Meetings for course activities and participation.
  • Providing feedback on your experience to help improve the integration and guide campus-wide integration.
  • Access to support provided by ITS and CELT in collaboration with the Microsoft vendor.

The Microsoft Education LTI for Teams and Meetings pilot is ideal for:

  • Instructors who utilize online synchronous sessions in their teaching and learning.
  • Faculty interested in experimenting with new technology and willing to explore how these Microsoft tools can enhance teaching and learning.
  • Instructors with the time to interact with the integration and provide feedback on their experience.

Instructors using remote-proctoring in their Canvas course are ineligible due to Canvas account restraints.

No. Enabling the LTI does not modify your existing course content, assignments, modules or grading workflows. It simply adds Microsoft Meetings and/or Teams as resources for virtual meetings, recordings, and collaboration in place of Webex.

If the Microsoft Education LTI for Teams and Meeting is not meeting your instructional needs, you may opt out of pilot participation at any time. However, the Microsoft Education LTI will still move forward to full campus implementation in May 2026, when it will replace the existing Webex LTI.

No. Students can access Teams Meetings directly via Canvas links without the need to install additional software.  Students may participate right in their browser or choose to install the desktop app for more features.

Yes. The Microsoft Education LTI for Teams and Meetings is enabled at the course level. You may choose to use the Microsoft Education LTI for Teams and Meetings in a single Canvas course, including one or more course sections, during the pilot.
